Old Canoe Creek Rd. update

Old Canoe Creek Rd closed

On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, a pipe failure under Old Canoe Creek Road (between US-192 and Neptune Road) caused a sidewalk to collapse.  As part of the review of this event, it was discovered that the two southbound lanes and the adjacent turn lane of Old Canoe Creek Road were also compromised.

Due to the extent of damage to the roadway and complications associated with the remaining pipe under the northbound lanes, this section of Old Canoe Creek Road is currently closed to traffic.  Northbound traffic on Old Canoe Creek Road is being detoured either east or west on Neptune Road.  The majority this section of Old Canoe Creek Road is open for local business traffic only.  Osceola County Traffic Engineering is monitoring and adjusting traffic signaling as necessary and had placed a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Neptune Road and Sergeant Graham Boulevard to address traffic flow issues in this area.

The pipe that failed under Old Canoe Creek Road is a nine-foot, corrugated round metal pipe.  At this time, the cause of the pipe failure has not been identified, but will be as part of the repair process.  The City of St. Cloud continues to monitor the roadway for and mitigate further deterioration.

The City of St. Cloud has engaged Jr. Davis Construction Company to design, permit, and construct the proposed repair.  The nine-foot corrugated metal pipe will be removed and replaced with a reinforced concrete box culvert.  The scope of repair includes:

  • Engineering for new pipe system, headwall, and roadway.
  • Acquiring permits for the improvements through the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and FL Department of Transportation (FDOT).
  • Diverting and maintaining the flow of the existing ditch.
  • Demolishing the existing headwall, pipe, roadway, sidewalk, and guardrail.
  • Adjusting the existing service utilities (electrical, fiber, cable, water, sewer, and reclaim).
  • Installing multiple sections of reinforced concrete box culverts at proper elevations.
  • Restoring/reconstructing the headwalls, pipe, roadway, sidewalk, guardrail, and utilities

The Estimated Completion Date (ECD) is February 29, 2020 (weather dependent).
The City understands that this is an inconvenience, but our goal is to be complete in the repair process.
