Mounted Patrol Unit
Patrol Unit Horses

The St. Cloud Police Department Patrol Division also includes two Mounted Patrol Units. These units combine the skills of certified law enforcement rider with trained horses. The units include Logan who is a five year old quarter horse with rider Sergeant John Kerr and Pistol who is a nine year old quarter horse with rider Officer Tia Thai.

Services

The Mounted Unit is used for special events, search and rescue missions, community policing and other law enforcement services. Throughout the first year of having the Mounted Unit, they have participated in several special events including training with different law enforcement agencies, participating in elementary, and middle school events which educate the students about the Mounted Unit. Whenever the Mounted Unit rides around the community, they are approached by citizens who are eager to learn more about the Mounted Unit.

Rider Training
Each horse is owned by their rider and each rider has to have written authorization to ride a department approved horse. The riders are responsible for supplying the horse trailer and the truck for the towing of the horses to each event, training and call-out. The riders are responsible for supplying their own saddle, saddle pad, and bridle. There is no doubt that each member is dedicated to the success of the Mounted Unit. In addition to providing their own equipment, each rider has worked very hard to successfully complete a 40 hour Mounted Unit Team training course with their horse.
