CAD/GIS Department

The CAD and GIS Department is actually one division of the Information Technology Department.  We are responsible for CAD (Computer Aided Design) - 3D Design, Engineering Drawings/Drafting, Security Design, Site-Mapping Design, Data Conversion; GIS (Graphical Information Sciences) - Geospatial Data, Web-Mapping, Security Survellance, as well as many other specialized operations as needed.  (Too many to list here.)

Our CAD and GIS Analysts may assist any City agency or department in design and/or production of internal and external projects in a digital or printed format, as well as hands-on material operations.  Presentations, desktop publishing, large-format scanning, photo enhancement, framing, illustrations, reproductions, all the way to full-blown architectural, civic or structural design using computer applications are all part of the daily routine for us.

We are responsible for coordinating, implementing and administering all types of Graphical Information Systems throughout the City.  City employees use CAD/GIS to answer questions such as:

What are the names of the subdivisions and where are they?

What is this property zoned for?

Where is this new utility located?

When do we need to service this utility next?  What shape is it in?

Does this need to be replaced or repaired?

Where is the location or address I need to send my crew to in order to fix a problem?

Do the Fire or Police Departments need an analysis of the area before they respond to the incident?

Where is the best place for our police efforts to help prevent crime?

The CAD/GIS Department collects the graphical data for the CAD/GIS systems such as sanitary sewer mains, manholes, water lines, etc.  We use engineering drawings and a variety of other available sources to create a visual map that is as accurate as possible and can be easily read by City workers needing to know all kinds of information in their daily routines.  A good map is a meaningful map, and as technology progresses in the CAD/GIS arena, the City of St. Cloud’s CAD/GIS Department will continue to implement newer technologies such as GPS (Global Positioning System) to enable us to obtain precise positions, locations and assets on the earth’s surface anywhere in the City within inches of accuracy.  CAD/GIS technologies enable better decision-making and increase government’s knowledge of how citizens may be impacted by those decisions.
